The Importance of Pet Wellness Exams

Pet wellness exams are an important way of helping to maintain your pet's long-term physical health and well-being.

Combined with regular pet vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition, routine examinations including physical checkups are your pet's best chance at excellent lifelong health.

When you bring your dog or cat in for their routine pet checkup, we can prevent health issues from developing in your pet, or catch them early, when they are most treatable.

Cat & Dog Wellness Exams, Los Angeles County

What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical Checkup

Our vets in Redondo Beach will provide your cat or dog with a comprehensive physical checkup in order to gain a complete picture of their overall health. Routine pet wellness exams provided by our veterinary hospital generally include the following elements:

General Condition

Your pet's general demeanor and physical condition can provide us with important clues about their overall health and well-being. The way your pet stands and walks, their weight when compared to their body size and their level of alertness can all be key indicators of their health.

Coat & Skin

Throughout your pet's checkup, we will examine their skin for signs of dermatological conditions or health issues. These can include excessive oiliness and dryness, dandruff, bumps and lumps or abnormal hair loss and shedding.

Face & Head

Your pet's eyes, ears, and nose will be examined for abnormalities or discharge. We will also check the mouth for symptoms of oral dental health problems such as plaque buildup or periodontal disease.

Internal Health

Your pet's heart rate, rhythm and blood pressure are all vitally important indicators of their heart health. We will test each of them to ensure that they are at normal levels. We will then examine their lungs and breathing for evidence of any abnormalities.

Lymph nodes will be checked for pain or swelling, and we will also examine the abdomen to ensure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver, and stomach all feel normal, and that your pet is not exhibiting any signs of discomfort.

Review of Findings

At the end of your pet's routine wellness exam, your vet will take the time to discuss any concerns they may have about your pet's overall health and talk to you about your dog or cat's nutritional requirements.

Vet Checkups for Puppies & Kittens

Puppies and kittens need proper medical attention in their first few weeks of life to get off to a healthy start.

We'll give your new best friend a complete physical examination, appropriate immunizations, and deworming medication. We will also test for intestinal parasites. You'll be provided with a puppy or kitten 'kit' filled with educational material and samples to help you care for the newest member of your family.

Please never hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have about caring for your new pet, both at your appointments or following your visits.

Once your puppy or kitten's checkup is complete, you'll return periodically for his or her required booster shots.

Seniors

With recent advances in veterinary medical knowledge and care, as well as newer therapies and better nutrition, senior pets are living longer than ever.

While this is excellent news for both pets and their owners, it does mean that your senior pet requires special attention during their routine healthcare as they continue to age. As your pet grows beyond middle age, routine examinations will become increasingly crucial to their continued health and longevity

In addition to the routine pet wellness procedures we perform on all adult pets, we will give special attention to your senior pet's potential geriatric conditions, such as arthritis or decreased vision.

Additional laboratory tests may be recommended for aging pets to provide more detailed information about your senior pet's overall health and wellbeing.
